AC Refrigerant R-454B: Answers to 6 Homeowner Questions

Most AC systems manufactured this year now use a new refrigerant, R-454B. At Symbiont Service, we’re here to help our customers and community navigate this industry-wide transition, and to explain what it means for you as a homeowner.
Refrigerant Transition Timeline:
- Dec. 27, 2020 – Congress passed the AIM Act, empowering the EPA to phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) due to their global warming impact. This includes an HFC known as R-410A, which was the standard refrigerant used in air conditioners.
- Jan. 1, 2025 – Manufacturing of R-410A systems is prohibited. New AC units must use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 750.
- Jan. 1, 2026 –R-410A units can no longer be installed.
Q #1: Why was R-454B chosen to replace R-410A?
A: Many manufacturers, including Lennox, adopted R-454B because its GWP of 457 (well below the 750 limit) make it a smart long-term choice. Other refrigerants on the market, like R-32, have GWP ratings much closer to the threshold.
Plus, R-454B is similar enough to R-410A that only moderate equipment design changes were required. This also helped reduce the learning curve for AC installers and service professionals.
Q #2: I’ve heard that R-454B is flammable. Should I be concerned?
A: R-454B is an A2L refrigerant: low toxicity (A), mildly flammable (2), with low burning velocity (L). For comparison, R-410A is rated A1 on the toxicity/flammability scale: low toxicity (A) with no flame propagation (1).
According to this informative video by the ESCO Institute, R-454B is slightly more flammable than R-410A (A1), but far less so than an A2 or A3 refrigerant.
A2L refrigerants have long been used in portable air conditioners and window units. Plus, at Symbiont Service, our technicians are trained in safe handling and installation of R454-B equipment.
Q #3: Can I still buy an air conditioner that uses the R-410A refrigerant?
A: Though we’re technically allowed to install R-410A air conditioners until January 1, 2025, inventory is basically depleted. Manufacturers started reducing production of R-410A equipment in early 2024.
Q #4: Is an R-454B air conditioner more expensive than an R-410A system?
A: Due to necessary design updates, costs are higher. However, Symbiont Service Corp is dedicated to getting you the best price on a new air conditioner. Ask us about promotions and incentives, like rebates on Lennox systems, power company rebates, and financing options that can help keep your AC upgrade affordable.
Q #5: Can I use R-454B in my R-410A system, and vice-versa?
A: No. Systems must only use the refrigerant they were designed for, per safety and code regulations.
Q #6: Will I still be able to repair my R-410A system?
A: Yes! Manufacturers are still making parts for systems that use the old standard refrigerant, and repairs are still allowed.
