Turn Off A/C When You’re Not Home
When summer – or even spring – arrives in Florida turning on the air conditioner is something that is done every day. If you have talked with one of our residential geothermal HVAC professionals from Symbiont Air Conditioning they may have said, it’s not necessary to run the AC when you’re not home.
Many homeowners feel that it’s best to come home to a cooled house instead of walking into a home that is hot and humid after having been out in the heat and humidity. We know that you don’t want to come home and feel uncomfortable.
Because you want to come home and be immediately cooled, you may think that turning the air conditioner on and turning it up when you’re away is a great idea. It really isn’t. Coming home and having to wait for the house to cool down to your liking isn’t something many homeowners want to do. That is the reason many homeowners turn on the air conditioner and leave it on all day, every day, regardless of whether anyone is home.
Turn Off A/C When You’re Not Home
This is not a great idea and here are a few reasons why you may want to reconsider.
- If you have a heating and cooling system that is well-designed, it should keep your house comfortable. The system will have been sized to the proper size for your home’s footprint. If you have a unit that is larger than necessary, it won’t cool efficiently and could lead to high humidity levels.
- Running the HVAC unit 24/7 puts a lot of strain on it and can reduce efficiency and wear-out components. Ask us to perform an inspection to ensure all the components are working and that the unit is operating at its peak.
- An AC unit that is running when no one is home will add to an increased utility bill.
- Environmentally-conscious homeowners worry about their carbon footprint and know that running an air conditioner when no one is home is needlessly harming the environment.
- An air conditioner that has simply on, off or up and down buttons doesn’t make it easy to make too many changes to the air temperature when you’re away. In fact, it’s impossible! Install a programmable thermostat and you can turn the AC on before you get home and it can cool down the house before you arrive. You can also program it to turn up a degree or two at night to help save money.
Keep in mind that if you have pets at home, you will need to take their comfort and health into consideration even if you’re away.
