Give our HVAC professionals a call and let’s discuss your residential heating and air conditioning needs whether we are in hurricane season or not. You may stock up on supplies for your family and pets, but do you think about the care your HVAC unit would need in order to make it through the storm without any — or minimal damage? Taking time now to prepare for hurricane season could safe you costly repairs later.
How Homeowners Can Prepare For Hurricane Season
Here are steps you can take to prepare for hurricane season or you can call one of our HVAC professionals to pay a service visit to ensure the unit is prepared.
- Prior to the storm. Outdoor air conditioning residential units are designed to withstand storms, but flooding can cause internal damage. Many older HVAC systems are on the ground and that could lead to flood damage. Give us a call and we can work with you to get the unit raised — onto a concrete platform. An elevation of even a foot may help your unit survive and not suffer flood damage. Get tie-down straps to ensure high winds won’t knock the HVAC unit off its platform. You will also want to gather up any loose objects in your yard and get them secured. Unsecured object become projectiles and could damage your house and the HVAC unit.
- During the hurricane. If the HVAC unit is on the ground (or even elevated, depending on how high the flood waters get) the main concern is electricity. Water can cause an electrical short out and that can damage the unit itself and even your home’s electrical system. Turn off the unit at the circuit breaker and use ceiling or floor fans to stay cool during the hurricane. Invest in a surge protector for the HVAC unit.
- After the hurricane has passed and everyone in your house and other family members are safe, you need to assess the damage. If there were electrical issues, though do NOT turn on the unit as that could cause a surge and you could also get injured. Begin with a visual inspection of the HVAC unit. Was it flooded? Is it still standing? Do you notice any wires or pipes that have come loose? Is there any damage to the unit from flying debris? If you notice ANY damage, call one of our HVAC technicians before you attempt any repairs or turning the unit on. However, even if you don’t see any outward damage, you may still want to call our professionals to perform a tune up and inspection prior to turning the unit on. There could be internal damage that will keep the HVAC unit from operating at its peak efficiency.
Give us a call and let’s set up a time for one of our technicians to perform a residential HVAC inspection before any storms arise. Talk with us about post-storm HVAC inspections and clean up — you may want to set up an appointment prior to the hurricane so you are on our calendar and so you can get up to speed and cool again!
