Is It Time To Turn On The Heat?
Bbbrrrr. It’s cold outside, but is it time to turn on the heat? Some people will wear sweaters and put off turning on the heat as long as possible. Others will turn on the heat at the first sign of temperatures below seventy degrees! The geothermal air conditioning experts from Symbiont Air Conditioning regularly talk with their customers about the “perfect” time to turn on the heater for the season.
Hint: There is no perfect time! Just as when you turn on the air conditioning for the first time each year, turning on the heat is personal as well. Although there are some indicators that we offer to help you know when to make the switch from AC to heat.
Is It Time To Turn On The Heat?
We don’t want to tell you to not turn on the heater, but we do want to offer a few suggestions to consider before you turn it on for the season and here they are:
- An inspection of the HVAC unit should be performed by a professional before it turns on the first time for the heating season. Whether you’re running a commercial HVAC unit or a residential one, an annual inspection is in order.
- Heated air is dry air and dry air can be bad for you and your home because it will decrease the humidity in the home or office. Decreased humidity can lead to static electricity and shocks. Your home computer or other electronics can be damaged by dry air. If your home or office has humidity levels that are too low you will feel colder and that will cause you to turn up the heat (unnecessarily) and cost you more money.
- Turn it off at night. Even if you aren’t warm enough during the day you will sleep better if you turn the heater off at night. Pile on a few more blankets and save your heating bills until later in the season!
Prepare your HVAC unit before you need it. Remember, this isn’t just a matter of flipping the switch from cool to heat. The home should be slowly introduced to the home. Turn the furnace on once it’s been inspected for the season and warm up the house or office slowly. Don’t set a specific date to turn the heater on — especially if a cold snap is underway. Comfort and health needs to be front of mind in all seasons.
You don’t need to go from “no heat” to “eighty degrees!” You may be more comfortable — or just as comfortable with the heater at a lower temperature if you just put on slippers or socks or a sweater. Save money by turning the temperature down, but don’t sacrifice comfort.
