What Is The Best Temperature For Your Florida Home?
When you share your home with others it may be a constant battle to find the “best temperature.” The air conditioning professionals from Symbiont Air Conditioning in Englewood, Florida offer tips for what is the best temperature for your Florida home. Know that even when we share this information the “best” is still subjective!
Consider that in Florida we are, and will continue to be, dealing with heat and humidity for many months to come and that means we want our homes to be an escape from that. Once winter arrives you’re looking to keep warm and comfortable even though Florida rarely sees or deals with frost or below freezing temps, there is a chill in the air that you want to alleviate, right?
Even when you settle on a perfect temp for your home, the insulation, the air flow and even how well your home is sealed, your 72 degrees may feel different than the 72 degrees you live with in the office or when you visit a friend or family member.
What Is The Best Temperature For Your Florida Home?
How can you find a balance between comfort and efficiency? You will want to consider the cost of your utility bills and also how comfortable you want to be at home. Saving money by setting your indoor thermostat to 80 degrees simply isn’t going to be comfortable, but dropping the indoor temps to 60 degrees will save you money, but you will not be comfortable with that temp either.
We have talked with several of our customers and have discovered this information when it comes to “recommended” ideal temperature and thermostat settings and they are:
The general consensus for recommended thermostat settings is:
- 76 in the summer
- 68 in the winter
If you are a senior, in ill health or have an infant in the home, our customers have told us these temperatures are more ideal for them:
- 72 in the summer
- 74 in the winter
Don’t forget to take the comfort of your pets into consideration. Smaller dogs and short hair cats may feel comfortable in a temperature that is a degree or two higher while a large, furry dog (like a husky) or a long haired cat may be uncomfortable in higher temps and it will be unhealthy for them, too.
To help with the comfort of your home in the summer use fans to create cross breezes in the home to help circulate the air and cool you as well.
Here are a few more considerations for heating and cooling your Florida home:
- Take the light that enters your home into consideration. If you have sunlight streaming into a large wall of windows in the hottest part of the day, you may need to re-think the temperature in the home. You could also, and probably should, have curtains that you close during the hottest part of the day to help keep the home cool.
- The humidity indoors and outdoors will change how comfortable you feel. If your house is too humid it will feel hotter. If the house is too dry in the winter you will feel colder. Ask us to do an inspection of your home’s HVAC unit to assure it’s properly sized and working correctly as that will impact humidity levels.
- Install a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature of your home while you’re away. You don’t want to heat or cool an empty home (unless you have pets there), so you will want to turn the temps down when you’re away and program the thermostat to turn onto your chosen levels before you get home.
Concerned about the air quality in your home, give us a call today. We are still working even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The filters in the HVAC unit also play a role in the comfort of your home. We can inspect those for you, clean and/or replace them to help assure your unit is working at peak levels and to ensure you’re comfortable in your Florida home.
