We have been asked many times how HVAC pros can address coronavirus concerns and because we have fielded that question so frequently, we have put this article together to help allay concerns.

How HVAC Pros Can Address Coronavirus Concerns
Heating, ventilation and air conditioner (HVAC) contractors and professionals are fighting next to public health workers to keep everyone safe from coronavirus (COVID-19). This virus, COVID-19, is in the same strain of viruses as SARS, which caused an outbreak in the early 2000s. HVAC professionals from Symbiont Air Conditioning are dedicated to prevention and containment to keep families and customers safe.
While there is no way to guarantee that a specific product will prevent infections from occurring, preventative maintenance, specific filters and HVAC products can reduce the risk of not only coronavirus but pollens, dust mites and other impurities from reaching the indoor air.
From the standpoint of HVAC, it is to prevent the spread of airborne viruses. It’s been determined that COVID-19 is a “droplet transfer” virus. This means the droplets that are too big to remain airborne (those spread through sneezing and couching – can be spread from contact with contaminated surfaces. The purpose of the social distancing mandates is that it’s believed the droplets won’t travel further than six feet. It’s not an impossibility, though, that some of the droplets will be small enough to remain airborne and make their way to an HVAC system’s return grill or even through the duct systems, and eventually infect someone who is in a different space entirely.
What are some of the best ways to prevent infection and how will the HVAC unit play a role?
- Filters – especially HEPA (high efficiency particulate arrestance) filters are the most effective at trapping airborne particles. In fact, a HEPA filter can trap up to 99.97 perfect of all particles. The filters in the HVAC unit clean the air and remove particles from the air. To be efficient, the filters need to be cleaned, and or replaced, on a regular schedule and having a high quality filter will trap and clean more of the air.
- Installing a ultraviolet disinfection system to complement the HVAC unit’s filtration system. UV systems can reduce the microbial load and kill pathogens found in the HVAC system and its drain pan and prevent reintroduction into the house or building.
Addressing customer concerns.
When our technicians pay a service visit, they will be properly dressed (mask, gloves and other protective clothing) and will remain well beyond the six-foot mandatory social distancing guidelines. You can share your concerns with our team before they arrive; when they show up you will have minimal to no contact with them because they will be performing the tasks you’d discussed on the service call.
When we work with homeowners we will recommend upgrades to higher quality/higher efficiency filters if the system is not already equipped with them. We may also recommend room air cleaners, in-home ultraviolet products, humidity controls and thorough cleaning of surfaces within the home.
