Do Pets Impact Filters In The Air Conditioner?
We love our pets. Dogs and cats help make our lives complete and offer companionship but they also bring with them fur and dander. If you have pets, have you given any thought to how that might be impacting your indoor air? Do pets impact filters in the air conditioner? The air conditioning professionals at Symbiont Air Conditioning in Englewood, Florida say, “yes!”
You can’t stop your pet from shedding. Even if you brush your pet regularly, he will still shed and that shedding fur and dander can impact the quality of the air in your home. Using a high quality air filter in your HVAC unit will help you with the air you breathe!
Do Pets Impact Filters In The Air Conditioner?
When you’re talking with one of our air conditioning professionals make sure you let him or her know that you have pets, how many and what kind. Some dogs shed more copiously than other dogs — huskies for example shed more than poodles. This difference in shedding will help your HVAC pro gain an understanding to the type filter you need and how often it should be changed.
What do HVAC filters do?
The air filters in the AC unit remove dust and pet dander, pollen and other particles and debris from the air. Air filters will need to replaced regularly in order to assure you’re breathing clean dust free air. A dirty air filter can lead to breathing issues especially for those who suffer from allergies.
If you’re a do-it-yourselfer you may change the air filter yourself. Make sure you read the packaging and understand the frequency with which the filter should be changed. But you will then need to take into consideration that if you have pets in the house, you will need to change the filter more often than the manufacturer suggests.
A clogged air filter will also make the unit work harder, won’t cool the air as effectively and will cost you more money on your utility bills.
When purchasing a filter choose the highest quality you can afford. If we change and service and maintain the filters for you, we will install high quality filters.
Choose an air filter based on its MERV rating (this is the rating that measures how effective the filter you’re buying is at capturing microscopic dust particles. The higher the MERV the smaller the particles it can capture. Skimping on the air filter will likely cost you more in the long run. A high MERV rating means the filter will do more filtering, the HVAC unit will need to work harder to do the filtering and that could lead to higher utility bills — it may be a wash for many.
If you have a houseful of pets you may want to choose a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. These filters are specifically designed for the pet owner. They capture small pollutants, particles, pet dander, bacteria and mold from the air. If you’re going to be making an investment in the filter you may want to look for one that is washable and re-usable.
Electronic air filters are another option for households with pets. The electronic air filter utilizes static electricity to attract pet dander and pet hair. The filters are effective, but expensive and you need to weigh its benefits and disadvantages. Also an electronic air filter isn’t as good as a HEPA filter at capturing and filtering small debris, bacteria and other air pollutants.
