3 Ways Florida Homeowners Can Slash Cooling Costs
The best thing about this advice is that they are inexpensive as well. In some instances, it makes sense to spend money so to save money, but in this case, we’re hoping you can save money in more than one way!
We will share both high- and low-cost options.
High: Start with your air conditioning unit. When you install a new one or replace a current unit, invest in a high-efficiency central air conditioner. Central air has become vastly more energy-efficient in recent years. If you’re replacing a unit that is more than ten years old you will find you will realize a close to 20-40% cost on your cooling bills. If you opt for a geothermal air conditioning unit will save even more. A geothermal heat pump can reduce energy useable by as much as 60%!
Low: Use a whole house fan. Whether you’re replacing the air conditioning unit, have central air or window air conditioning units, when you use a fan you’re helping circulate the cooled air and that will make the house cooler. If you don’t have a whole house fan, invest in regular fans and strategically place them around the house to force the cooled air into the rooms that require it.
High: Upgrade your windows. If you have drafty, single-pane windows you are essentially paying for cooled air that is going right out the window — literally. When you replace your windows you can lower your energy costs by more than 10%.
Low: Upgrade and update your curtains and use them strategically. Invest in dark shades and curtains. Close the curtains in the hottest parts of the day. Caulk the windows and add weather stripping.
High: Upgrade your roof. You can install a rooftop solar cooling and heating system. In Florida, we certainly have the sun available to make a solar upgrade a viable option.
Low: Insulate the attic. If your attic is properly insulated you will save on cooling and heating costs. Many homes in Florida are under-insulated and that means the cooled air is escaping through the roof.
